The Drachenstein offers a wonderful view towards Inselsberg and Hörselberg. It is located on the wine route between “Hohe Sonne” and “Mosbacher Linde”.

In the Middle Ages, the upper Mariental was a refuge for hunters, charcoal burners and mineral prospectors. As early as the 18th century, work had begun on creating walking paths and hunting corridors for the ducal court in the forest area to the south between the Hohe Sonne hunting lodge and Wilhelmsthal Palace – this is recalled by the field names Schwalbennest for a rest area, Hochwaldgrotte, Luisengrotte and Prinzessinnenstieg. When the first excursion restaurant – the Phantasie – was built in the Mariental, still far outside the town, in 1830, the development of the rocky gorges south of the town for hikers and walkers was initiated. At the same time, Gottlob König, Carl Grebe and Herrmann Stoetzer endeavoured to make the forests usable and develop them, and funds were made available for forest and path construction for this purpose.

The Drachenschlucht near Eisenach in the Thuringian Forest is about 2 kilometers long and in some places only 70 centimeters wide. The gorge was opened up in 1832 by Gottlob König. Hikers can walk through the narrow gorge with its bizarre rock formations and roaring stream and enjoy the mystical atmosphere.

The Landgrafenschlucht can easily be combined with the Drachenschlucht as a circular tour. There are places to stop for refreshments in the Hohe Sonne along this route.
