10월 8, 2025, Old Hospice of Saint Gotthard

Cappella di San Gottardo - Chapel at the Gotthard Hospice The St. Gotthard Pass was first used as a pass starting in the 13th century, and the hospice, built at the behest of Milanese Archbishop Galdino (1171), also dates from this period. A chapel was built alongside the hospice on the site of a small church dating back to the 9th/10th century. It was rebuilt towards the end of the 18th century at the instigation of the Capuchins, who managed the hospice until 1799. St. Gotthard Pass The Gotthard Pass divides waterways and connects various cultural and linguistic areas. Its significance as an "Alpine transversal" began at the beginning of the 13th century with the construction of the legendary Devil's Bridge in the Schöllenen Gorge. For many centuries, trade caravans (trading cattle and cheese for grain, wine, rice, and salt), mercenaries, messengers, and even entire armies crossed the pass. Between 1818 and 1836, the canton of Uri, with the help of other cantons, expanded the pass road, thus achieving its predominance among Swiss Alpine passes. The Gotthard Pass has significantly shaped the economy and culture of Central Switzerland for centuries. Until the opening of the Gotthard Railway in 1882, the Gotthard Pass was also used in winter. Dozens of roadmen and shovel workers were employed for this purpose. In 1922, the post bus replaced the stagecoach, and with the introduction of gasoline duties in 1923, the expansion of the pass roads began, continuing to this day. The old pass road on the south side, the Tremola between the top of the pass and Airolo, is still preserved and passable. This stretch of road recalls more tranquil journeys over the Gotthard that occurred not so long ago. In the 19th and 20th centuries, the Gotthard Pass was "condensed" into a myth, a symbol of Switzerland's independence, unity, and identity. Let's say it's the halfway point in the Gries tour. If you do it on foot, it's best to climb from Lake Morasco, taking the steep section at the beginning, and then descend to Riale dal Maria Luisa on the Jeep trail that descends gently. If you do it by mountain bike, on the other hand, it takes skill to descend towards Morasco, as they say.

The Tremola Pass road is an absolute must for every cycling enthusiast. An impressive monument of architectural art. I would never have thought the cobblestones would be in such good condition that you could ride up there on a racing bike without any problems. Simply fantastic.

Probably the most famous cobblestone road in the Alps! Going downhill, you should take the main route, especially on a racing bike! Going uphill, however, this road is a MUST for every cyclist! Of course, I also tried the downhill... I won't soon forget the massage...

The Gotthard pass is located at an altitude of 2,106 meters and connects the canton of Ticino in Italian Switzerland with the canton of Uri in German-speaking Switzerland. Historically the San Gottardo pass was important for pilgrims who wanted to reach Rome: this, in fact, was one of the quickest passages to cross the Alps. At the summit there is the Piazza lake and the San Gottardo hospice, founded in 1237 .

The Gotthard Pass can be reached from Airolo via a road called 'Panoramica' or via the historic 'Tremola'. This road is considered a road monument, and is characterized, for the most part, by cobblestones. In particular, the last four kilometers boast a difference in altitude of 300 meters and 24 hairpin bends. Although a mountain bike is recommended, the Tremola can also be done on a racing bike: the Tour of Switzerland stopped on the Gotthard via this road, and Egan Bernal won the stage.

The famous Tremola, with its 24 switchbacks, is a must for every road cyclist. With good basic training, a few meters of climbing under your belt, and gears suitable for mountain climbing, it's also doable for mere mortals. Yes, you do have to mentally prepare yourself for a good hour of uphill riding at an average speed of 10 km/h (or faster, depending on your fitness). But the suffering is definitely worth it. Once you've made it through the lower half, it just keeps getting better. You'll be greeted by the beautiful, slightly less steep switchbacks, and you'll see what lies ahead. It's a wonderful sight. Smile and ride on!

There is something very special about arriving at the Gotthard. The atmosphere and joy about the climb and the infamous tremola is unique. Once at the top you can't help but take a picture. Beautiful landscapes, great views and restaurants with many happy and tired cyclists await you. This pass has decent potential for addiction. He's worth every bit of suffering.

From the Middle Ages until the construction of the railway and motorway tunnels, the Gotthard Pass was one of the important north-south connections across the Alps. The Gotthard axis is the still important European traffic axis that runs north-south over or under the Gotthard massif. Wikipedia Height: 2,106 m Road: A2

Since the 13th century, the Gotthard Hospice has been the epitome of a stopover on a journey, on a path from there to there, to there from there. The St. Gotthard as a meeting place, as a hostel, as a center - a place that separates worlds, but above all also brings worlds together. A tourist camp is available for inexpensive overnight accommodation. In this hostel you can meet people from all over the world and share interesting experiences about the Swiss Alps with them. The hostel has 3 rooms for 12 people and one double room. Thanks to its location right next to Albergo San Gottardo, you can also benefit from the restaurant.

The originally heterogeneous structure of the old hospice has recently risen defiantly and archaically, expanded by one floor, under a new lead roof. Numerous dormer windows refer to the new hotel rooms. The architects preserved the facades and the chapel attached to the north in their original form, removing only a more recent addition, while almost completely renovating the internal structure of the hospice. Solid interior walls and ceilings are inserted in the two lower floors. Above this, a wooden stand construction on the inside of the old quarry stone facade ensures sufficient thermal insulation and serves as a support for the new wooden beam ceilings and the roof construction.

The ancient Ospizio del San Gottardo is on the European Heritage List. The label recognizes the importance of a monument to the history and culture of Europe. The old Gotthard Hospice (2100 m above sea level) has been a symbol of the connection between the cultures of northern and southern Europe for centuries. It probably dates back to the 13th century and is the most historic building on the Gotthard. Famous personalities have already been here: Goethe, for example, Mendelssohn and Wagner.
