The lake was created by local gravel extraction starting in 1922. It covers an area of approximately 70 hectares with a maximum depth of twelve meters. The lake is surrounded by large pine and mixed forests, including the Schweinert nature reserve, which contains one of the largest Bronze Age burial mound fields in Europe.

The lake is used for fish farming, nature conservation, local recreation and flood protection.

The lake view at Kiebitzsee is one of the few places in the renaturation area where you should go right up to the water, otherwise there are many prohibition signs on this side of the lake.

The water sprite at the Benkenteich near Torgau. The legend: A man from Klitzschen had collected firewood in the forest. At the end of the 15th century, the brothers Ernst and Albrecht von Sachsen had an artificial pond built near Torgau by decree from the Electorate of Saxony. It should be used for fish farming and thus supply the farm. During the fortress period, the Great Pond also served as a water reservoir for filling the moats. Today it is a dam and flood protection system and at the same time an important nature reserve and local recreation area. The Great Pond is still used for fish farming. Then as now, the dam is filled with water from the Black Graben. The system also dams the Zinna flood (Red Ford). The Great Pond has an average depth of 1.34 meters and covers an area of 175 hectares. The barrier structure is a five meter high earthen dam.
