We had only planned a short break and ended up staying at this great location for 90 minutes. On this bike tour, in our opinion, an absolute must.

Tip

A highlight of the slate mine is the opportunity to descend 20 meters into the tunnel. The mine has served as a supplier of slate roof tiles for Marienstatt Abbey and Hachenburg Castle since the Middle Ages. Having fallen into oblivion and only discovered by chance in an old document, the mine was rediscovered after a 17-year search and subsequently restored. Located directly on the Westerwaldsteig hiking trail, the mine is open to visitors year-round.

The detour is a must. Children should be offered a helping hand. But doable.
