The red cross marks a pass that was used by historic trade routes and was so important that the Romans built a fort to control it. The castle in Oberreifenberg later served the same function in the Middle Ages.

The restaurant hasn't been operating here since 2022—closed due to relocation. Unfortunately, it's just rotting away... It would be nice if something were happening here again...

The red cross marks the pass toward Weiltal. The cross was renewed a few years ago, replacing the previous weathered wooden cross. This was an important place not only during Roman times, as the Limes passed through here and a guarded road likely existed even then. This pass was also important in the Middle Ages, between Königstein and Reifenberg.

The Red Cross is a 688 meter high pass in the Hochtaunus (not to be confused with the "Gasthaus zum Roten Kreuz"). It connects the Weiltal with the Vordertaunus and has been used since time immemorial (long before the Romans). The top of the pass is marked with a (name-giving) red sandstone cross!
