The Hinterfrankenberg castle ruins are a fascinating destination for anyone who wants to combine history and nature. The remains of the former castle are idyllically situated on a hill and offer a great view of the surrounding landscape. Although only ruins remain of the castle, you can feel the breath of times gone by here. The old walls, some of which have been reclaimed by nature, are particularly impressive. Sturdy shoes are recommended as the paths to the ruins can be uneven in places. A visit is particularly worthwhile for history buffs and hikers looking for a quiet place to linger. Don't forget to bring your binoculars - the view is worth it!

Hinterfrankenberg Castle is the second castle on the Frankenberg, next to Frankenberg Castle (Vorderfrankenberg Castle). Both structures are only about 62 meters apart. Hinterfrankenberg Castle is the older of the two structures. At its maximum length, the castle was 230 meters long. The castle area was protected by several outer castles and ditches. The actual main castle consisted of a ring with five towers. A round keep stood free in the castle courtyard. After it was used as a quarry in the 19th century, the double tower, two vault remains, the formwork of a well and a single wall remainder have been preserved. The castle park is freely accessible. Hinterfrankenberg Castle was first mentioned in 1225. The lords of the castle changed several times before the castle was burned down in 1462. The castle was rebuilt between 1480 and 1488 and then finally destroyed in 1554.

The cypress lake is part of the English landscape park in the castle park. Originally circular, it has silted up and grown over in many places over the years. In the middle of the cypress lake, the bald cypress tree, which was probably planted by Count Alexander, has still been preserved today. Bald cypress trees actually come from southeastern North America and can grow up to 35 meters tall. This bald cypress is estimated to be around 100 years old. This is still a very young age for the tree, as bald cypresses can live up to 1000 years. The bald cypress in the castle park is now around 23 meters high and has a trunk circumference of around 2 meters. In the cold season the tree does not make a good impression. Bald cypresses not only shed their needle leaves in autumn, but also entire branches. However, when the tree sprouts bluish-green young shoots from June onwards, it is a real show. https://mit-mama-nach.de/traumrunde-schwanberg/

The inner part of the park is designed in a strictly formal manner. A large avenue of linden trees runs through the entire length of the park as a central axis. A walk along the avenue is always an experience: In spring, walk under the delicate green of the awakening linden trees, in summer, enjoy the shady coolness under the roof of the avenue, in autumn, walk on the golden carpet of linden leaves and in winter, enjoy the bizarre crown shapes of the avenue trees. https://www.geistliches-zentrum-schwanberg.de/erleben/schlosspark/rundgang-schlosspark/
