Definitely worth it, especially if it's been really cold for more than 3-4 days!

Veitshöchheim is a municipality in the Lower Franconian district of Würzburg and is located on the Main. The town is a former summer residence of the Prince-Bishops of Würzburg, later of the Kings of Bavaria. The palace complex with its Rococo garden is well-known. Veitshöchheim was first mentioned in 779. The parish of Veitshöchheim was donated to the monastery of St. Stephan in 1097 by the Würzburg bishop Emehard. Veitshöchheim Palace was built between 1680 and 1682 under Prince-Bishop Peter Philipp von Dernbach and expanded between 1749 and 1753 by Balthasar Neumann. The construction of the court garden, which belongs to the palace, began in 1702. The parish church of St. Vitus, which still exists today, was consecrated in 1691, and the Veitshöchheim synagogue was built between 1727 and 1730. In 1814, the town finally fell to the state of Bavaria, after only nine years earlier it had become part of the Grand Duchy of Würzburg. The municipality was formed in its current form in the course of the Bavarian administrative reforms in 1818. Veitshöchheim train station with the royal pavilion was built in 1853 and 1854 under Maximilian II of Bavaria. Source: Wikipedia

A wonderful, light forest that gives you a holiday feeling. It smells of pine needles, especially when the sun is shining, and is even more beautiful then.

I simply love the forest. Especially in summer when it smells so good! I hope it stays with climate change for a long time to come! Best way: Black owl 🦉

Höchberg sandstone quarry Due to its good workability, the sandstone of the Lower Keuper is particularly suitable for sculpting and building purposes. Widely distributed in and around the Main triangle, it was previously mined in numerous quarries there. One of the few well-preserved historical sandstone quarries is located near Höchberg. Leinach/Erlabrunn - Volkenberg Loop This varied circular hike leads over the Eschberg, Mühlberg, and Volkenberg mountains, as well as through Germany's largest contiguous black pine forest. A highlight of the hike is the "Maria Hilf" chapel, the pride of the Erlabrunn residents on the Volkenberg. The chapel with its onion-shaped domes was built in 1875/1876. It also offers fabulous views of Erlabrunn, Thüngersheim, the Main Valley, the neighboring town of Zellingen, and Leinach. Also worth seeing is the 15th-century watchtower ruins. The circular trail follows the footpath to Volkenberg, passing the cemetery and climbing gently toward the vineyards. For the first few kilometers, you can enjoy magnificent views of Thüngersheim, the Main Valley, and the Scharlachberg on the opposite bank of the Main. Passing orchards, wild natural landscapes, and numerous seating areas, the tour runs on paved surfaces, natural paths, and narrow trails through open fields, as well as through the forest. Along the way, hikers can enjoy not only the magnificent panoramic views of Zellingen and Retzbach, but also the picturesque Leinach Valley from the Eschberg. The adventure hike takes approximately three and a half hours. The tour passes the following sights: the 15th-century watchtower ruins, located in the middle of Germany's largest contiguous black pine forest, two memorial stones for the field sworn men (first in the Leinach area, later in Erlabrunn) with covered tables for seven, a stalking trail that encourages visitors to use their senses, and the Erlabrunner Käppele on the Volkenberg, from where you have a wonderful view of Erlabrunn and the Main Valley. Important and good to know: The trail is well signposted, but the trail markers are not always immediately recognizable and may be overgrown during the flowering season. For example, at the beginning of the hike after the cemetery, the nature trail slopes uphill. The trail logo on the "Fourteen Larches" sign is only immediately apparent at second glance. Here, too, it's important to keep to the right. In summer, be sure to bring sunscreen. Trail markings The trail is marked with a green square on a white background, the letters "ZV E+W Wü" (the abbreviation for the association), and black stylized mountains and trees surrounded by a circle.
