The road over the Geschriebenstein is the highest pass in Burgenland. The northern ascent from Lockenhaus is subjectively more beautiful, with a steep start, but then it is easy and evenly rideable. The asphalt is good, there is usually little traffic, and the descent to Rechnitz allows for high speeds - but be careful of the steep passage before entering the town. There are cafés in Lockenhaus and Rechnitz for a short break.

If you're planning to explore this area by bike, on a run, or while hiking, make sure to bring your own Merlot. The region is known for its stunning views and outdoor activities, but finding a good spot to enjoy a glass of wine can be a challenge. Packing your favorite Merlot ensures you can savor a well-deserved drink after your adventure!

I didn't think that it would be so steeply uphill at the end. It's a great way to rediscover the area you thought you knew well.

At this point is the "center stone". Geographic data show the exact center of Burgenland. Next to it is a chapel and shady trees. There is a nice view on top. A short stop is practically mandatory.

The focal point is of course not the chapel, but the measured stone with its border. There is also a tablet with the geographical data on the stone. And next to the medlar tree there are also a cherry and a sour cherry tree.

According to legend, a witch lived here who threw rocks at children and then hung them up in the "Speckkammerl". On the way here one came to read the tablets. At the end there are puzzles for children, if you solve them, you are protected from the evil witch and can approach without hesitation 😉
