The pass is at an altitude of 2,379 m. The Georgian Military Highway runs over the Cross Pass from Tbilisi through the Darial Gorge, located north of the pass, to Vladikavkaz in Russia. The border with Russia is just under 40 km further north.

Great view of the Ushba. Ushba (Georgian უშბა; usch "terrible", ba "mountain") is a double peak in the main ridge of the Greater Caucasus in Georgia. The south summit is 4737 m high and the north summit is 4698 m high. The north summit was first climbed by the English in 1888, the south summit for the first time on July 26, 1903. Before that, there had been around 20 failed attempts. The south summit was considered the most difficult mountain in the world at that time.

The ascent to the Atsunta Pass (3520 m), the highest point of our trekking trip in Georgia, is quite exhausting because of the altitude and the muddy path. The path meanders through scree and blocks gradually upwards. After 2-3 hours strenuous ascent we reach the windy pass. This is where the border between Chewsureti and the Tushetian region passes, which now welcomes us. Looking back, we see again in the distance the 5000 m high Kasbeck. A steep path in gravelly lunar landscape leads down to greener fields. Relaxed it then goes over flower meadows and along a mountain stream to the camp, which bears the name Kvachida.
