Wonderful view of the Feldbergsee. Behind it you can see the Raimartihof, which invites you to rest after the long descent. Hinterzarten is further away.

A gorge worth seeing through which the wild Ravenna brook paves its way over many cascades and waterfalls. The two largest are the big Ravenna-Fall with 16 meters and the small Ravenna-Fall with 6 meters.

The tower, named after the Baden Grand Duke Friedrich I and his wife Luise, was built in 1913 and is now used by the German Weather Service as a weather radar system, which is housed in the radome above.

Of course there are bigger waterfalls in the Black Forest, but it is the biggest waterfall in the Ravennaschlucht. Nice to look at!

In order to get the best angle for a landscape view of the Feldsee, it is worthwhile to walk down the narrow path behind the Bismarck monument about halfway up. From there you have the best view. But be careful: do not leave the existing paths and when using a tripod make sure not to destroy the roots of the plants 🌱

If you stay on the path you will only see the waterfall from above. In front of the wooden stairs you can take a few steps into the gorge, then you can also see the waterfall from below. Be careful when it rains, it gets slippery here.

The largest waterfall in the Ravenna Gorge. You can only get there directly off the path. Surefootedness is definitely required.

Great view down to the Feldsee. The monument is right next to the mountain station of the cable car.

The Feldberg was probably once owned by Stuttgarter Hofbräu - they then donated the mountain to the Black Forest Association.

The path leads into the Ravenna Gorge under the mighty railway aqueduct. Past a historical wood saw. In the gorge itself, the path leads moderately uphill via a few stairs and footbridges along the stream. At the time of my existence it was pleasantly cool in the hot summer temperatures. Passing some small stone pyramids, the gorge has already been left behind.

The Feldsee is the highest lake in Germany outside the Alps. The approximately 97,500 m² large and up to 32 m deep Karsee was created by glaciers from the last ice ages. It is bordered on three sides by steep walls up to 300 m high. It is almost circular, with a diameter between 350 and 370 meters. The elevation, which is open to the northeast at 1,100 m and which allowed larger amounts of snow to accumulate and maintain, was the cause of the armchair-like shape of the terrain with the steep back wall, the flat floor and the moraine wall in front.

My tip for the Ravenna Gorge: If you install it in a circular hike, it is best to start with the gorge, since there is usually a lot more going on later in the day.

In 1890, the admirers of Chancellor Otto von Bismarck met for the first time on the Feldberg. The idea arose to erect a memorial in honor of Bismarck on the Seebuck. Three years later, at the meeting on April 1, 1895 in the Feldberger Hof, the implementation was assured. Professor D. Dietsche modeled the relief with the image of Bismarck. Under the direction of the Freiburg city architect Thoma, the monument for 18,000 marks was erected on the highest point of the Seebuck. On December 4, 1896, it was the first Bismarck monument in Baden to be inaugurated. At the same time, the hiking trail that leads up from the Feldbergerhof to the Seebuck and was called the Kapfererweg was opened for use. Since 1890, Bismarck admirers have come together on the Feldberg every year to celebrate the "iron chancellor" and to honor his memory. The celebrations continued until the war year 1941. On April 1, 1945, a few days before the end of the war, a few Bismarck friends laid a wreath at the monument on the Seebuck for the last time. Because the Friends of Bismarck's Association no longer existed after the end of the Second World War, nobody paid any attention to the memorial in the first few years after the war, and it fell into disrepair. In 1956, the Hochschwarzwald district office was forced to intervene because the masonry was no longer stable. But because no owner could be identified, the fate of the monument seemed sealed. However, since, like the Feldberg tower, it had become a landmark of the Feldberg summit, the municipality of Feldberg campaigned for its preservation. During the first days of May 1956, the upper third of the monument collapsed as a result of erosion damage. The Feldberg community carried out the reconstruction in 1966. The costs amounted to 29,000 DM. They were largely covered by donations; the Upper Black Forest district donated DM 15,000.
