20 million years ago, laurel forests were widespread throughout Europe. They died out during the Ice Age and could only survive on Madeira, the Azores and the Canary Islands. Climbing plants, tendrils, giant ferns. Plants that would otherwise have become extinct in Europe have survived here. It was declared a World Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 1983.
