beautiful path along the monastery ponds

The neoclassical portico in Braunschweig's Bürgerpark immediately catches the eye. Six Doric columns support a triangular pediment. Designed by Peter Joseph Krahe and erected in 1806, the columned porch once served as the facade of the Augustus Gate. After the former main guardhouse was dismantled, the portico was moved here in 1896. Today, one can enjoy the tranquility of the park from its steps.

🌿 Ecological Significance The area, which covers approximately 300 hectares (originally 460 hectares), has developed into a valuable secondary habitat. The pond landscape and wetland attract numerous water birds and wading birds. Over 300 different bird species have already been observed here.

🕊️🦢 The Braunschweig sewage fields are a fascinating area in the northwest of the city, representing a unique combination of nature conservation and wastewater treatment. Similar to the Münster sewage fields, they are an artificially created wetland that has developed into a significant natural paradise.

Very nice path and also a little quieter and not as crowded as in Riddagshausen.

A park like no other! Beautifully situated with so many opportunities to enjoy your leisure time. The Oker River flows right through the middle!

The extensive pond landscape in Riddagshausen is the result of the work of the Cistercian monks, who drained the then very swampy area and created fish ponds. Of the original 28 ponds, 11 still exist today, of which the Mittelteich and Kreuzteich (between which the excellent path marked here runs) are among the largest. The ponds are home to a rich variety of flora and fauna.
