              The old town market is the center of the old town. It was laid out as planned in the 12th century with the expansion of this part of the city to the north and the award of city rights as the main market and later as a trade fair site. With the carefully related buildings of St. Martini (7) and the old town hall (1) on the west side and the market fountain (4), the old town market received its late medieval character in the middle of the 15th century.
              As a counterpart to the ducal area at the castle and cathedral, the civic pride of the former Hanseatic city found its structural expression here. The dense rows of town houses on the other sides of the square formed a closed urban space.
              During the Second World War, the old town market suffered severe damage. The reconstruction followed the concept of the traditional islands. The valuable large buildings and the fountain were repaired and extensively reconstructed. Their effect was to be enhanced by a new development with colored plaster facades, approximating to the ridge and eaves.
              The half-timbered houses on the south side of the square were not rebuilt, the north wall of the Gewandhaus (5) remained free.
              The newly built half-timbered house (6) is a reminder of the destroyed buildings. It ensures the unity of the old town market and the spatial connection to the Martinikirchplatz.

                The old town market has been trading for 700 years. In the Middle Ages everything that caused a sensation took place here.

                The square, which was laid out in the 12th century, was the main market and exhibition center, fair and place of execution, the venue for equestrian games, tributes and processions. A town hall as a sign of municipal self-government can be traced back to 1253 in the old town, before the old town hall, which has been preserved to this day, was built.

                The old town market with the old town hall, the Martinikirche (12th - 14th centuries), the old customs house from 1643 and the Gewandhaus with Renaissance gable from 1590/91 is a gem of the past. The Marienbrunnen, cast in lead in 1408, is the natural center of the square.

                    The Altstadtmarktbrunnen, also occasionally referred to as Marienbrunnen in recent times, has stood on the Altstadtmarkt in Braunschweig since it was erected at the end of November 1408. Alongside the Braunschweig lion, the old town market fountain is one of the few free-standing monuments of international standing in the city.
                    It is a late Gothic three-bowl fountain which, as can be read in Latin on the rim of the lowest bowl, was cast in the year of the Lord 1408 on the eve of St. Catherine, that is on November 24, 1408 ("anno d[o]m[ini] MCCCC VIII vigilia katerine fusa est"). The casting material used is lead from Rammelsberg near Goslar, about 50 kilometers south of the city.

                    The three differently sized, pyramid-shaped bowls are decorated with numerous coats of arms, figures, floral decorations and Middle Low German and Latin inscriptions. From the Middle Ages to modern times, the spring well served to supply Braunschweig's old town with drinking and extinguishing water.

                    It is not known who designed the fountain, where it was cast and who carried out the casting. Also unknown are those who created the figures, letters and other decorations or made the tabernacle.
