We searched and searched and searched and... unfortunately, we couldn't find it. 😢 The artwork appears to have been removed. Two boring benches now stand in its place.

6월 28, 2025, Sint Jacobspolder Nature Reserve
On the southern edge of Zuid-Beveland, near Baarland, a new nature reserve was created in 2007. This was done to compensate for the nature that is being lost due to the deepening of the Western Scheldt. The deepening increases the current and the nature outside the dike on the Western Scheldt is crumbling. The two most important goals in the creation of this area were to provide a high-water refuge for wading birds and a breeding area for coastal breeding birds. The area is used extensively by coastal breeding birds. Birds such as ringed plovers, ringed plovers and avocets are extensively searching for worms, crustaceans and cockles. In the spring of 2009, the nests were counted and it turned out that more than 110 pairs of avocets were breeding. The young are currently leaving the nest. Wherever you look, you can see this beautiful creature wading through the area. The ranger also counted a small colony of breeding black-headed gulls, a few Kentish plovers, a few little ringed plovers and three pairs of ringed plovers. You can take a look at this nursery. The area is right next to the Scheldeoord campsite in the south of Baarland. You can look out over the area from the Zeedijk. This area falls under Natura 2000

6월 29, 2024, Muiepolder Badstrand Sint-Maartensdijk
Muiepolder Badstrand is a very small piece of "beach". Near a campsite, with a small parking lot and somewhat closed for children. I prefer wide, deserted walking beaches by the sea, but it must also be nice to relax here. If you want to see the quality of the water before you go, you can always search the Internet for "Muiepolder Badstrand" as it is called. And then you might also find the description below: "Sint Maartensdijk Muiepolder Badstrand is located on the Oosterschelde in the province of Zeeland in the town of Sint Maartensdijk and is part of the municipality of Tholen. It is a saltwater location that is under the influence of the tide. In the There are several camping sites near the beach. There is a cycle path along the dike. North of the swimming location is the De Pluimpot nature reserve. That text comes from the bathing water profile of the beach of Rijkswaterstaat Sea and Delta at https://register.zwemwater.nl/zwr/api/files/6046348

6월 29, 2024, De Pluimpot Nature Reserve
De Pluimpot is a small but fascinating nature reserve on Tholen. You can access it via some accesses to the walking paths with information boards such as here. You can also access it via the parking lot at the tiny beach and the village. On the other side of the road you see a sign for a piece of nature, Tholen Dorpsbos St. Maartendijk, but that is only a small piece of green and not really a forest. Back to De Pluimpot. You can read everything about the nature reserve on this link: https://www.zeeland.com/nl-nl/visit/190_nl/natuurgebied-de-pluimpot There you can see that the Pluimpot was one of the largest channels when Tholen still consisted of small islands separated by channels. De Pluimpot was even the sea channel that divided Tholen in two after all the salt marshes had already been reclaimed. Already in the sixteenth century, people started to dam the Pluimpot and the last part was closed in 1957. Today's nature reserve was created after that damming and is therefore a dammed creek where you will find many water birds (and others) and also a specific flora. Binoculars are useful with all those birds. There is a wooden bridge over part of the creek and there are paths that run all the way next to the water, to or from the area around the Sint-Maartensdijk swimming pool.

4월 1, 2024, Verdronken Land van Saeftinghe
In the Western Scheldt, the fresh water of the Scheldt river and the salt water of the North Sea come together. On the left bank of the Western Scheldt you will find the largest brackish water marsh in Europe, the 36 km2 Verdronken Land van Saeftinghe. The mudflats and salt marshes of this area attract many bird species. So be sure to bring binoculars to this area to see which species you spot.

The drowned land of Saeftinghe, 36 km² brackish water marsh. It gives an image of the primeval land of Zeeland: life to the rhythm of the tide. The water of the Western Scheldt flows into the area at every high tide, and at low tide the water drops again. The water reaches the dike via the three main channels that branch into the area. In the Western Scheldt, the fresh river water of the Scheldt is mixed with the salty water of the North Sea. Tens of thousands of birds come here to look for food, breed, rest and hibernate. More than 200 bird species have been observed over the years!

A work of art in Middelburg that regularly causes great amusement is located in front of the Town Hall on De Markt. Here you will find a model of the town hall on a pedestal with two bronze chairs next to it. Just sit on one of the chairs and peer into the peephole. According to the text on the artwork, you can see 'the sewage system of the city from the VIIIth century'. Do you see the trickle of water flowing from the bottom of the chair? Where does that come from? The object, called 'Fountain', was designed by artist couple Ilya and Emilia Kabakov and puts a smile on the face of both children and adults. Tip: The fountain only works in spring, summer and autumn due to frost in winter. Location: De Markt, Middelburg Source: https://allyourz.nl/ontdek-zeeland/kunst-op-straat-in-middelburg
