The Vilsteren weir was built after the length of the Overijsselse Vecht was reduced from 90 to 60 kilometers at the end of the 19th century. The weirs served to prevent high areas from drying out and low areas from flooding. Next to the dam is a fish ladder that provides a spectacle during the spawning period: spawning fish can bridge a height difference of 1.5 meters thanks to the fish ladder.
