The oldest stone parish church was built around the year 1000 by Archbishop Willigis of Mainz. Well-preserved floor tiles from this Romanesque structure still exist, located in the tower named after the archbishop, approximately 70 cm below the current floor level. The door that led into the church during the Romanesque period has also been uncovered. In the round-arched area above the lintel, on the inside facing the chancel, the image of Christ enthroned, long hidden beneath a thin layer of plaster, has been revealed. This fresco, created in the first half of the 13th century, is the only surviving image from the Romanesque predecessor church. [Note 1] The Romanesque parish church was replaced in three phases during the 15th century by the current Late Gothic building. The initiative for the new construction came from the parish, which was responsible for the construction and maintenance of the chancel. The historic town center is formed by the market square with its churches, all within walking distance. The medieval structure of Bad Sobernheim is still recognizable in the townscape today. Sections of the old town wall still stand. Half-timbered buildings line the market square.

The Disibodenberg Chapel stood on the Sobernheim estate belonging to Disibodenberg Abbey. The estate was part of the initial endowment for the founding of the Augustinian Canons Regular monastery by Archbishop Willigis of Mainz (975-1011). From the beginning, it was by far the largest estate in Sobernheim.

At the first ceremony of the German War Graves Commission (Volksbund Deutsche Kriegsgräberfürsorge), founded after the horrors of the First World War, on March 5, 1922, Reichstag President Paul Löbe said: “A nation that honors its dead honors itself and will draw from this the strength to seek the path to new life, to the bright day. A nation that honors its dead will forge a common bond around many souls who suffered the same sorrow, and will extend this bond to the mother on the Volga and the Tiber, whose grief for her son who never returned home was no less painful than that of the mother on the Danube and the Rhine. To alleviate suffering, to heal wounds, but also to honor the dead, to mourn the lost, to reflect and introspection for the individual, for a nation, for humanity—this means turning away from hatred, means returning home to love.”
