The oldest stone parish church was built around the year 1000 by Archbishop Willigis of Mainz. Well-preserved floor tiles from this Romanesque structure still exist, located in the tower named after the archbishop, approximately 70 cm below the current floor level. The door that led into the church during the Romanesque period has also been uncovered. In the round-arched area above the lintel, on the inside facing the chancel, the image of Christ enthroned, long hidden beneath a thin layer of plaster, has been revealed. This fresco, created in the first half of the 13th century, is the only surviving image from the Romanesque predecessor church. [Note 1] The Romanesque parish church was replaced in three phases during the 15th century by the current Late Gothic building. The initiative for the new construction came from the parish, which was responsible for the construction and maintenance of the chancel. The exact date of the start of construction can no longer be determined. Only two documents confirm that the construction work was carried out at the beginning of the century. The historic town center is formed by the market square with its churches, all within walking distance. The medieval structure of Bad Sobernheim is still recognizable in the townscape today. Sections of the old town wall still stand. Half-timbered buildings line the market square.

In 1896, the two parishes of Sobernheim ended the shared use of St. Matthias Church, a practice that had existed since the late 17th century. The Catholics were compensated with a redemption payment and committed to moving into a new church building by the end of 1898. After plans to expand the Maltese Chapel fell through, planning began for a new building in the parish garden. The parish council commissioned the experienced Mainz church architect Ludwig Becker to design and build it. According to his plans, a three-aisled hall church was built in 1898/99, which, from the outside, exhibits all the typical architectural features of Neo-Gothic churches. The interior, however, breaks with traditional models to accommodate changing liturgical needs. The parishioners of Sobernheim did not want a separation of the nave and side aisles, as in the previously shared church, where those in the side aisles could not follow the Mass at the altar. Architect Becker achieved this by separating the naves only with slender, round pillars spaced far apart, thus minimizing any obstruction to the view of the altar. In the chancel, which was originally planned to be one bay longer, he omitted one bay, so that the altar—entirely in keeping with the new understanding of liturgy—was brought closer to the congregation. The Disibodenberg Chapel stood on the Sobernheim estate belonging to Disibodenberg Abbey. The estate was part of the initial endowment for the founding of the Augustinian Canons Regular monastery by Archbishop Willigis of Mainz (975-1011). From the beginning, it was by far the largest estate in Sobernheim.
