Matthias Church in Bad Sobernheim

The St. Matthias Church was built around the year 1000 by Archbishop Willigis of Mainz. 500 years ago, with the completion of the western Ruben tower with its stone pyramid roof, the church received its current late Gothic form (construction period: 1383-1482). Remains of the first Romanesque church have been preserved in the northern Willigis Tower. The chancel (14th century) and nave (15th century) form a hall church with four bays. In addition, there is the eastern three-sided choir with two bays, the northern aisle with three transverse gables and saddle roof, the main entrance built like a hall in the north and the sacristy attached to the south. The figures attached to the pillars, the baptismal font, various remains of wall paintings and tombstones from the 15th - 17th centuries are valuable details of art history. In the years 1959-1969 extensive renewal and security work was carried out. The modern tracery windows by Georg Meistermann are of particular artistic value and well worth seeing.

The very special attraction, however, is the Stumm organ from 1738 installed on the west gallery of the Matthias Church.
