The rock formation covers approximately 120 hectares. It was formed by corrosion of the dolomite rock of the Causse Noir. It was originally assumed that the rocks were a ruined city, and it was not until 1870 that a trench was cut through the rocks. The speleologist Edouard-Alfred Martel was the first to map the rocks in 1883-1884.

The rock formation is located in the western part of the department on the high plateau of the Causse Noir. To the north lie the rivers Tarn and Jonte, to the south lie the Dourbie gorges, and to the west lies the town of Millau.

Spectacular...Impressive, well worth a few minutes of stopping for a few photos.

This superb rocky chaos is dominated by a monolithic keep 50 meters high. Its enormous rocks rising from the ground give it the appearance of a natural fortress. Impressive !

The Roc Nantais is a rock in the shape of a monumental tower dominating the Dourbie at 808m. It obviously offers a magnificent viewpoint from which to admire the Larzac and the foothills of the Cévennes (on the left), the St-Alban (opposite) and the Causse des Cuns (on the right).

Roquesaltes is a site that is home to ruiniform chaos and a magnificent farmhouse with typical Causses architecture.

"The high rocks" of the Causse Noir are in fact a strange chaos of pebbles with strange shapes, recognizable from afar. The place is ideal for taking a break, next to the old Caussenarde farm, where there are even picnic tables.

At the top of the stone you can enjoy your lunch break and shy away from the wide country. Highly recommended. The forest is also fantastically beautiful. In autumn you can pick porcini mushrooms here.
