The Wye was voted the nation’s favourite river in 2010. It starts not far from my home town in Brecon in mid-Wales and trundles south for some 150 miles before meeting the Severn. I have forgotten how many times I have cycled it, run it and kayaked it. Simply my favourite place on earth!

Jump off the bike and head on foot down the footpath east of the road to reach the Symonds Yat Rock. Symonds Yat Rock harbours the remnants of an Iron Age hillfort, erected roughly 2,500 years in the past. Presently, this locale stands as a Scheduled Ancient Monument, where traces of the fortifications endure as a series of embankments and trenches. In more contemporary times, Yat Rock and the Wye Valley have gained renown as the birthplace of British tourism. Beginning in the 18th century, they achieved popularity thanks to the efforts of Reverend William Gilpin, a trailblazer of the 'Picturesque' movement. His literary works left an indelible mark on the appeal of English landscape painting and served as inspiration for Romantic poets. Symonds Yat Rock viewpoint enjoys a well-earned reputation as one of the nation's prime spots for observing peregrine falcons. Yet, with a touch of patience, a multitude of bird species can be sighted here. Goshawks offer close-up viewing, sparrowhawks are frequent denizens nesting among the valley's trees, while soaring buzzards often grace the skies. Spring and autumn migrations frequently draw ospreys to this locale, with tawny owls occasionally spotted. Meanwhile, nearby nesting sites typically host barn owls, ravens, and kestrels.

The fourth-longest river in the UK, the Wye stretches 155 miles (250 km) from its source on Plynlimon in the Cambrian mountains to the Severn estuary. For much of its length, the Wye marks the border between England and Wales, with the lower section being designated an AONB. The Wye is important for nature conservation and recreation, but, particularly in recent years, is severely affected by pollution.

This pretty, wooded area with its network of small caves - the result of former quarrying - is a nature reserve with a rich variety of flora and fauna. Horseshoe bats and rare invertebrates such as the cave spider and hibernating herald moths make their homes within the caves.

Puzzlewood (grid reference SO578092) is an ancient woodland site and tourist attraction, near Coleford in the Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire, England. The site, covering 14 acres (5.7 ha), shows evidence of open-cast iron ore mining dating from the Roman period, and possibly earlier. Over a mile of pathways were laid down in the early 19th century to provide access to the woods, and provide picturesque walks. The area contains strange rock formations, secret caves and ancient trees, with a confusing maze of paths. The site is listed as a regionally important geological site in the 'Forest of Dean Local Plan Review'. The geological features on show at Puzzlewood are known as scowles. Scowles originated through the erosion of natural cave systems formed in the Carboniferous Limestone many millions of years ago. Uplift and erosion caused the cave system to become exposed at the surface. This was then exploited by Iron Age settlers through to Roman times for the extraction of iron ore. It is usually impossible to date open-cast extraction precisely, although ores with a chemical signature consistent with those from the Forest of Dean were certainly used to make tools and weapons in the late prehistoric period. Over 3,000 Roman-era coins were found by workers in 1848. The coins were stored in three earthenware jars in a cavity in the rock formations. The origin of the coins is unknown. Puzzlewood has been used as a filming location for both film and television in recent years. Was the best view by far along the whole hike and was worth the wait. I would just go to see this view if I ever did it again.

From Caldwell Rocks, you get a magnificent view over the Wye Valley. It is also a great spot to watch peregrine falcons. Around this area, archaeologists have uncovered bones from hyenas, sabre-toothed cats and a mammoth.

Berry Hill is a village in Gloucestershire, England, 1.5 miles north of the town of Coleford. Berry Hill includes the settlements of Five Acres to the east, Christchurch in the centre, Shortstanding to the north, and Joyford to the north-east. Berry Hill is within the civil parish of West Dean.

King Arthur's Cave is a limestone cavern at the foot of a low cliff at the north-western end of Lord's Wood, near Symonds Yat. The cave entrance lies about 285 feet (87 m) above the River Wye. It has a double interconnected entrance and two main chambers. Protected as a nature reserve under the Herefordshire Nature Trust, there is evidence that the cave was occupied by man during the Upper Palaeolithic era. Flint tools and woolly mammoth bones have been unearthed within and around the caves.

Symonds Yat is a village in the Wye Valley and a popular tourist destination, straddling the River Wye in the English county of Herefordshire, close to the Gloucestershire border. It is within a few miles of Monmouthshire and the Welsh border. The two settlements either side of the river are known as Symonds Yat (West) and Symonds Yat (East) and are linked by a footbridge and passenger ferries. Nearby is Symonds Yat Rock. The Seven Sisters Rocks are an outcrop of rocks forming cliffs above the Wye at Symonds Yat.

Archaeologists have uncovered bones from hyenas, sabre-toothed cats and a mammoth in and around the caves of the valley and human habitation can be traced back to 12,000 years ago with findings of their tools and clothes. In the Iron Age the forts on the Great Doward and Yat Rock provided secure, defensible settlements for the local residents. During Roman times these forts became focal points in the region and the importance of the iron here and in the Forest of Dean made this a valuable prize for the conquerors. Offa's Dyke, built in the 8th century to separate England and Wales, runs close to Symonds Yat. The first recorded use of Symonds Yat in connection with the area is in a Patent Roll of 1256, where the place appears as Symundesyate and Symondesyate. This may contain the Old English personal name Sigemund or a very early surname deriving from it. Yat represents the Old English word geat (pronounced "yat"), meaning 'gate' and describing the gorge. Although a popular local belief, it is not true that the addition of Symonds was made in the 17th century in reference to Robert Symonds of Sugwas and Evesfield, High Sheriff of Herefordshire in 1685, who was indeed a member of the family who owned the lands from Wormelow near Hereford to the border regions in which surround the Yat. The area is also shown as Symons Yate on maps in 1665, Symons Yat in 1717 and Symmonds Gate in 1830. The Yat Gorge was mined for iron ore and remains of a smelting works are located down stream of the Symonds Yat Rapids.[3] The ironworks at New Weir date from the 1590s and were operated by the White family until 1753, when George White leased the site to John Partridge, an ironmonger from Ross on Wye. Partridge combined the ironworks at New Weir with his forge at Lydbrook which smelted pig iron from his furnace at Bishopswood. The works closed when the lease ran out in 1798 and the adjacent weir and lock buildings were demolished and the lock filled in 1814. The ferry at Symonds Yat has always played a huge part in the life here. In 1800 there were 25 hand ferries between Ross and Chepstow just like those outside Ye Old Ferrie Inn and the Saracen's Head today. They were introduced in Roman times to link the forts of the Doward and the Yat and have served military, civilian, tourist and horse traffic over the years.

Discover the ancient hill fort, spot birds of prey and enjoy a snack from the log cabin cafe. There are waymarked trails linking to the River Wye and a choice of circular walks into the forest itself. RSPB volunteers are on hand from April to September to help you spot the Peregrine Falcons which nest nearby. Symonds Yat Rock viewpoint is well known as one of the best places in the country to watch Peregrine Falcons. However, with a little patience, there are many other birds that you can seen here. Goshawks can be viewed in detail, Sparrowhawks are frequent and breed in the trees in the valley as do Buzzards which can be seen from above whilst soaring. Ospreys also often stop here in the spring and autumn migration. Tawny Owls are sometimes seen roosting and hooting males are occasionally heard during the day. Barn Owls, Ravens and Kestrels also usually nest nearby. RSPB volunteers are at the viewpoint daily from Easter until September and during Autumn and Winter there are usually bird enthusiasts on site to help point out the birds.

From Symonds Yat Rock you are afforded a stunning view over the picturesque Wye Valley. This viewpoint is one of the best places in the country to watch peregrine falcons. Keep a look-out for other birds, including sparrowhawks, ospreys, buzzards, and owls.
