Breathtaking and impressive views of the surrounding mountains and fjords. Simply magnificent!

Gaustatoppen is several hundred meters higher than the surrounding mountains, and during the last ice age the peak rose above the ice sheet like a nunatak. Frost heaving over thousands of years has caused the mountain's surface to crack into blocks that now lie loose, forming a "block sea". But that's just on the outside. Just below the surface is solid rock, almost the hardest rock there is. That's why the peak is so high.

A popular and straightforward route that features a hefty amount of elevation gain. However, two rewards await you at the summit. First, there are the magnificent views of the mountains of the mountains of Telemark, Buskerud, and the Oslomarka. Second, there's the thrilling run back down.

Beautiful hiking tour on a clearly visible, unmarked hiking trail from the junction (parking) to the summit of the Bossnuten. Panoramic views of Gaustatoppen, Mosvatn and Hardangervidda.

With its 1432 meters and spectacular view in all directions, this is not to be missed if you want to go hiking. The path that starts at the intersection Rjukanvegen/Varlandsvegen is the best place to start, and gives you a hike of around 3,7km with 460m of elevation. Not a very long climb, but a somewhat steep one. You often see families with kids take this route.

The tour starts at Northern Europe's first cable car, «Krossobanen», which takes you up to the foot of Hardangervidda. From here you follow a gravel path before walking the 1.1 km long natural stone path to the gun emplacement. There you will find remains of the German WWII canon emplacement, as well as a great view of Gaustatoppen mountain, the former Vemork hydroelectric power station and the Hardangervidda.
