Beautiful and quiet forest (if in high season). The hiking trails are almost in order, sometimes it can be a bit muddy during heavy rain. If you are lucky you might spot some deer 😊

The executions were carried out in secret and the victims were buried anonymously. A number of the resistance fighters killed in Rieme (who - since the Rieme execution site had to make way for the Kluizendok - are also commemorated here) were found in a mass grave in Hechtel-Eksel (Limburg). As a result, it is still unclear how many people died there. Today, this place is a green zone for peace and contemplation, where we commemorate the resistance fighters. The execution site was protected as a landscape in 1966, because it is important for history and must be preserved for future generations. The fort and the line dike are still clearly recognizable in the landscape. Restoration work was carried out in 2009, which also included the construction of a new drawbridge and the reconstruction of the courtyard. The fort is now a nature reserve, managed by Staatsbosbeheer. It is freely accessible and there are hiking trails.

The Groote Gat near Koewacht is a remnant of a creek that reminds of a dike breach in the distant past. The water in the creek is fresh, unlike most creeks in Zeeland that have brackish or even salt water.

Evides supplies water from the surrounding polders and lowers it into the ground from special infiltration channels. Soil organisms purify the supplied water. We then pump the water out of the ground via shallow drains and make it suitable for our customers in a purification system. Most of the water is intended for industry. But in case of emergency, we can also supply drinking water to the residents of Hulst here. The soil in the water extraction area consists of sand. The soil is too poor for agriculture, but the forests provide space for all kinds of plants and animals that are not common in Zeeland. The water extraction forests consist mainly of exotic trees that have been planted for forestry. But there are also old pedunculate oaks and beech trees, which provide shelter for birds, insects and mammals. There are small-scale fields around Sint Jansteen, which we sow with old grain varieties. Part of the crop remains in the winter so that birds can still find food. Bushes and small trees at the edges of the fields provide space for special insects. Partridges, yellow wagtails, meadow pipits and skylarks breed among the wild field weeds. Cultivated crops and nature conservation reinforce each other in this beautiful Zeeland-Flemish area.

9월 2, 2023, Fort Sint-Jacob
With its neighboring forts Sint-Joseph and Sint Livinus, Fort Sin-Jacob is part of the Spanish Line of Communication between the locks of Ghent and Hulst. The fort was constructed in 1634 as a simple, square defense structure in the sea wall. a moat more than 10 meters wide surrounded a courtyard that could be reached via a bridge. At the center of the fort was a guardhouse 'watchtower' to monitor the wide tidal area between the line and the Land of Axel against attacks by State Armies. In the courtyard there is a cannon that faces north (Staatse Legers).

The Groote Gat is a remnant of the military inundation in the battle against the French. When this dike was breached, the polders around Koewacht were flooded. When the dike was repaired, people went around the deepest part of the channel, hence the bend. The deepest part has remained as a creek. Now this pond is an excellent place for recreational fishermen and waterfowl. Don't forget your binoculars and enjoy life on and around the creek.

This area has seen its share of wars. It could hardly be otherwise, for a forest that dates back to the 13th century. The War of the Spanish Succession still rears its head here and there. Here you will find remains of the Line that served in 1701. (Information board on site) One of the paths in the bid is therefore called "Liniedreef". This runs along the canal "De Linie".

The Rieme-Oostakker Execution Center is the place in the Ghent borough of Oostakker where 66 resistance fighters were executed by the German occupiers between 8 February 1943 and 24 August 1944. The memory of the 20 resistance fighters who died at the execution site of Rieme is also kept alive here

History about the spacious surroundings of this highlight. Discover the traces in the landscape. Explanation: Fort Bedmar was built in 1701 by order of the marquis of the same name, in a strategic location at the intersection of the Clingedijk and the Koningsdijk. The quadrangular fort was one of the most important fortifications of the Bedmar Line. It is striking that these new forts were much larger than their predecessors, because the range of the artillery had increased considerably. Today there is a campsite on the site of the fort. However, if you look closely, you will still see many remains. The gentle slope of the campsite is nothing more than the glacis, the raised firing zone in front of the fort. The plot layout of the campsite suggests the shape of the former fort. A large part of the inner moat has been preserved behind the laurel hedge. On the access roads to the campsite, cobblestone strips mark the fort moats and a section in Corten steel shows the structure and height of Fort Bedmar. The Groote Gat on the Fortdijk near Koewacht is a creek remnant that reminds of a dike breach in the distant past. The water in the creek is fresh, unlike most creeks in Zeeland that have brackish or even salty water. The creek is a remnant of the deliberate flooding of the area in the battle against the French. When the dike was breached, the polders around Koewacht were flooded. Nowadays it is a nature reserve of 17 hectares, managed by Staatsbosbeheer. Fishing is allowed all year round at the creek.
