In 2021, the controlled flood area on the Koebeek will be realized to protect Torhout from flooding. The project resulted in a landscaped park with a lookout tower, decking, a tension spring and picnic benches. Since the Flemish Region became the owner of the centuries-old Vijverbos, the green area in the northeast of Dentergem has been called ‘the Meikensbos’, after a reference on the Sanderus map of 1641, namely Meykenhoek. In the 19th century, these forests became fragmented. Due to the steady cutting for firewood during the two world wars and due to development for the benefit of agricultural land, the forest area shrank to a mere 5 ha.
