The Zandpanne Nature Reserve is a valuable dune area between Wenduine and De Haan, known for its variety of dune forests, open dunes and moist dune valleys.

On the coast's second-highest dune (31 m) stands a small white pavilion with a red roof: the Spioenkop. It offers a magnificent panorama of the polder landscape beyond, the wooded surroundings, and the coastal plain. At the foot of the dune lies the Rotonde, the place to be for sunbathers, anglers, pétanque players, and children.

The Yser is historically important because of the role it played during the First World War. The river formed a natural defense line and was the scene of fierce fighting. Today, you can find various monuments and memorials along the Yser that commemorate this period, such as the Yser Monument at the Ganzepoot. The Dune Forests of De Haan are one of the green pearls on the coast. The area consists of three parts and is 152 hectares in size. From west to east, these are the Dune Forests of Klemskerke, Vlissegem and Wenduine. The nature reserves De Zandpanne and De Kijkuit are connected to this, both managed by Natuurpunt. This creates a large and varied dune area with forest, dune scrub and dune grasslands.

There are a total of four lookout towers in the Blankaart. This one here is the highest: 10m. It overlooks the reed marshes and the wet hay fields. The inspiration for the design of the viewpoints comes from the reed marshes. Just as the bittern blends with its tall figure into the reeds, the towers blend into the open space of the Blankaart, while at the same time they are beacons in the landscape. The rising walls with sloping elements, openings and green plexiglass refer to the reed collars in which birds can hide and which still have a certain transparency.
