From the banks of the Danube, you can enjoy a view of the Abwinden-Asten power plant, one of the largest run-of-river power plants in Austria. The facility extends over 252 meters and consists of nine Kaplan bulb turbines with a total output of 168 MW. The low-rise design of the powerhouse, which blends seamlessly into the surroundings, is particularly striking. A cycling path runs directly past the power plant, offering both close-up views and photo opportunities. For nature lovers, the fish bypass, opened in 2020, is a highlight, as it allows fish safe passage upstream and supports the ecological sustainability of the power plant. The surroundings along the banks of the Danube are particularly attractive for cyclists who want to enjoy the combination of technology, landscape, and nature.

Today, I saw the new fence for the first time, along with the automatic gate that closes when the number of people on the stairs exceeds 300. It's encouraging that there's now an official way to climb these stairs to the memorial again. This massive and certainly very expensive security system with its many video cameras does seem a bit absurd!

The Ennsegg bicycle ferry connects the towns of Enns, St. Pantaleon-Erla, and Mauthausen across the Danube and is particularly popular with cyclists on the Danube Cycle Path. It operates daily from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. from May to September, and until 7:00 p.m. from June to August. Crossings take place at short intervals of approximately five to ten minutes, and up to twelve people with their bicycles can be transported at one time. The ferry offers a weatherproof crossing and is also suitable for groups. This makes it a practical and scenic way to cross the Danube and connect the cycle paths on both banks.
