The only road crossing over the Mitterberg at the level of the Kalterer See, past the ruins of the Laimburg and the Leuchtenburg. The Mitterberg consists essentially of volcanic rock, the Bozen quartz porphyry. On its eastern flank it is quite steep, the road leads over three hairpin bends with up to 14% to the saddle. The road has just been redone on the east side, so it has an excellent surface on this side.
