As of June 11, 2025: The road is officially still closed, but you can carry your bike past the snow slab at approximately 1,800 meters. At approximately 1,900 meters, there's another small snowdrift, which is officially closed. There are still boulders on the next 500 meters (route), but you can ride your bike all the way to the top. Great road, especially without motorcycles and cars today!

The pass road was built in 1915-1916 as a military road for Austria-Hungary by Russian prisoners of war. Over 400 of them died in an avalanche in March 1916 alone. The Predil pass is located at 1,156 meters above sea level on the border between Italy and Slovenia. Until 1918 it was part of the Austro-Hungarian empire. After the First World War it was Italian territory, until 1947 when it became part of Yugoslavia. Since 1991, it has been the official border between Slovenia and Italy. The pass is easy to drive up to the car park near the Mangart hut. The road is narrow in parts but otherwise in good condition. From the car park, after a hike of about three quarters of an hour, you are at the top of the saddle. Here you have a magnificent view of Italy and Austria.

The lodge stands on a terrace south below the 1737 m high Vršič, which rises above the road crossing. Here, where the home is now, there was a border guard between the two wars.
