The Meerbruch is a wetland landscape with shallow water areas, ponds, plants and ditches and is a habitat for numerous animals. The protected area is located west and southwest of the Steinhuder Meer between the towns of Mardorf, Rehburg-Loccum, Winzlar and Hagenburg in the Steinhuder Meer Nature Park. It protects a large wetland that was created by the silting up of the Steinhuder Meer from west to east. The lowland was previously characterized by alder swamp forests on fens and was regularly flooded when the Steinhuder Meer flooded in winter. Today, grassland with varying degrees of moisture and different levels of use predominates and is protected from flooding by a dam. The Meerbruch meadows are crossed by numerous ditches, some of which were created in the 1950s to drain the area. The drainage measures largely destroyed the flora and fauna that was once typical of wet meadows.
