The Zittenfeld Spring in the Odenwald is considered one of the possible locations in the Siegfried legend from the Nibelungenlied, where Hagen treacherously slew the hero. Whether the event actually took place here or at one of the region's other springs remains uncertain. What is certain, however, is that the spring itself has an ancient history: Its water springs from layers of red sandstone, which formed around 246 million years ago in the Mesozoic era and today cascades down the rock face, sometimes with more, sometimes with less water.

It is a tufa waterfall that was formed by the deposition of lime from the water of the Kirnau.

A nice place to rest, very nicely done

The Kirnau originates just north of Altheim, then flows through the Limes town of Osterburken. In Adelsheim it flows over a small tufa waterfall (the highlight) and then flows into the Seckach from the left.

Nice to look at. For me it was the highlight in Adelsheim 🙈
