Great campsites at about 10 000 ft (3200 m) elevation, near the headwaters of Shepherd's Creek.

Complete with a privy! And it’s a 10/10 privy here, friends. Fully stocked with toilet paper and hand sanitizer. There was no complimentary newspaper, but there WAS a Leave No Trace poster on the wall inside, so that counts for something I guess. Note that if you’re planning on making a 2am dash from your tent to this gem of a privy here, this campsite is for tents only, and if you want to spend the night here (as well as anywhere else in Inyo National Forest) you must obtain a permit via Rec.Gov. Search for Inyo National Forest permits, then select your entry/exit location as “Piute Pass”. Easy peasy, lemon cheesy.

Breathtaking view and feelings of happiness guaranteed after the ascent! There are several metal signs on the summit that can be used for a photo. The shelter was full of snow when we were up and I didn't look further. And yes, there is a cell phone network and almost all thru hikers use this to get in touch with loved ones. ;)

With an elevation of 4,421 meters, Mount Whitney is the highest point in the United States. The summit is the southern end of the famous John Muir Trail. At the summit is the Mount Whitney Summit Shelter, a granite shelter built in 1909. It has three rooms and was built as a refuge for hikers from storms, but also to house scientists studying altitude. It is the site of Charles Greeley Abbot's spectroscopic observations of Mars to test whether or not the planet had water.

Beautiful views of the mountain that you will soon conquer, as well as alpine lakes resembling gems. A very nice reward.

You'll need to leave Whitney Summit by noon to have a reasonable chance of getting to Whitney Portal before sunset.

Mengel Cabin is a wheatherproof hut just like the Geologist's Cabin at Anvil Spring Junction and it is also stocked with food and water. It also has an outhouse. The cabin is a great spot for exploring the area and canyons on foot. The "Greater Views Spring" is next to the cabin. ATTENTION: It is not rodent-proof! So beware of the dangerous and often fatal Hantavirus that small rodents carry. Don't stir up dust if there is proof of mice or other rodents like feces or urine. To get here, a 4x4 high-clearance vehicle is strongly recommended.
