Recreation area "De Meent" guarantees fun and relaxation for young and old. While the children are playing and swimming, you can laze on one of the beaches. You can go out with the whole family by canoe and explore the area from the water. This is a nice place to enjoy a cup of coffee and a snack, we settle down at the cozy beach club that is present. De Meent is a beautiful and cozy recreation park of Uit®waarde, located near Beusichem in the municipality of Buren. It offers plenty of opportunities for swimming, relaxing, fishing, walking, sports, playing and canoeing. Children can enjoy themselves all day long on the Jutterseiland, with natural playground equipment, a raft and a hut. There is also a retro fitness trail. There are various sports and games activities for young and old, which are often used by regional sports clubs. There are various walking and cycling paths around the recreational lake. The Tichelgaten, also known as “the Put of Buren,” is a unique nature reserve just outside Buren. The area offers various discoveries all year round, from resident, migratory and water birds to dragonflies, damselflies, butterflies and other insects. In addition, there are mushrooms, mosses, lichens, trees and plants to be found. The Tichelgaten were created by clay and sand extraction. The Buren map of 1890 shows the first buildings of the N.V. Waalsteenfabriek, located along the Korne, Kornedijk and Hennisdijk, where construction company Van Kessel is now located. The clay was extracted from a stream ridge along the Hennisdijk, whereby the terrain was excavated by hand to 1 meter, causing calcareous sand to come to the surface. Wet grasslands, scrub, alder forest and roughs developed in the excavated areas. The ponds were formed between 1922 and 1964 by sand suction, and the large pond, which was given the name “de Put van Buren”, was dug between 1951 and 1954. Source and more information: ivn.nl

Buitenkil is a gully (or wheel or waal), a deep hole created by a dike breach. These holes are so deep that the dike could no longer be closed and was therefore placed around the chamber.

The Kloosterwiel was created when the Waal broke through a levee. This happened before there were dikes in the Bommelerwaard. Such a levee breach is called a crevasse and forms in an elongated, shallow pool of water. This is still clearly visible at the Kloosterwiel. The Kloosterwiel probably arose in the tenth century, at least before the dikes that were built in the Bommelerwaard between the tenth and eleventh centuries. The wheel was previously called St. Peter's Wheel. To counteract the strong seepage from the wheel to the environment, a seepage dam was placed around the entire wheel in the past. The western seepage dam was more to the west. The seepage may have been so strong that an additional seepage dam was constructed. It can therefore be quite wet here. The water level of the wheel rises and falls with the river, the influence of the Waal is clearly felt here. The footpaths are now partly over these higher and drier seepage dams.

And once again an archaeological gem appears at Over de Maas in Alphen: a horn of the giant musk ox. The discovery of the remains of a giant musk ox from prehistoric times in sand mining Over the Maas near Alphen once again confirms the special character of this archaeological treasury.
