Beautiful unpaved sand road through the wet nature reserve Empe and Tondense Heide. Although free cycling is not allowed in this nature reserve of Natuurmonumenten, the Mestweg and Lage Steenweg seem to be exceptions due to overarching traffic rules on these old road surfaces. All side paths such as the boardwalks are clearly forbidden for cyclists.

Forest paths, moss paths and waters. The origin of the star forest is swamp. The area has raised paths constructed in an intricate star pattern. This used to be a hunting area.

At normal summer conditions of the IJssel, you can enjoy recreation and swimming. From the picnic bench at the end of the sandy road, you have a beautiful view of the IJssel and Nijenbeek Castle on the other side. Storks can almost always be seen there and with a bit of luck you will also see deer, egrets and spoonbills. Beautiful gravel path in a beautiful nature reserve. Please note, this is also a popular walking area where you share the paths with walkers (and dogs).

The Douwelerkolk is very likely a remnant of an old IJsselarm, but we cannot be completely sure. The different soil types and groundwater flows in the chamber create an area rich in flora and fauna.

Careful of the narrow cycle gates across the lake, especially if you have a tandem, or trailer, or like us, both!
