Corullón Castle is located in the El Bierzo region. It was built as a mansion and recreation by the Rodríguez de Valcarce family in the 14th century. The castle stands on a Roman fort and a medieval tower. Throughout its history, it belonged to various families, including the Álvarez Osorio and the Álvarez de Toledo. Currently, it is owned by the descendants of the Marquises of Villafranca. Although it cannot be visited, its history and architecture make it a historical and artistic monument of the region. 🏰🌟

Corullón is a small town on top of a hill near the Burbia River. The most outstanding monuments are the castle of Corullón from the 15th century and the Church of San Esteban.

If we arrive from Corullón, we will go through a picturesque road until we reach the Castle, where the undergrowth does not allow us to enjoy the building in its maximum splendor. The castle is best seen from the road.

The building, from the early 16th century, is a large square with circular cubes in the corners and palatial rooms around a central interior patio.

To this day, the impressive walls of the castle give a well-fortified impression.

Villafranca del Bierzo takes its name from French immigrants who (re)populated the region after the Reconquista and built a castle. Villafranca thus became a stage of the Camino. In later centuries it was the capital of a county. Here we find the Santiago church from 1186, the 16th century fortress, the authentic Calle del Agua, the Plaza Mayor, the San Nicolas church, a Jesuit monastery and a former monastery church of San Francisco. Francis of Assisi founded the monastery in the 13th century on his pilgrimage to Santiago.
