    Villafranca del Bierzo takes its name from French immigrants who (re)populated the region after the Reconquista and built a castle. Villafranca thus became a stage of the Camino. In later centuries it was the capital of a county.
    Here we find the Santiago church from 1186, the 16th century fortress, the authentic Calle del Agua, the Plaza Mayor, the San Nicolas church, a Jesuit monastery and a former monastery church of San Francisco. Francis of Assisi founded the monastery in the 13th century on his pilgrimage to Santiago.

            132 km from the city of León is this town of Villafranca del Bierzo that seems to have stopped in time. Without a doubt, a place of pilgrimage on the way to Santiago and an almost obligatory stop on any route through the north of Spain.

              The Camino de France is well marked over its entire length in Spain for the pilgrims who want to Santiago de Compostela. A scenic delight for hikers and bikers. The KM stones stand by the wayside and the famous mussel can be seen everywhere, as well as a yellow file. The Camino also takes care of your physical well-being! For € 10 already, there is the so-called pilgrim menu, which consists of a starter, a main course and a dessert. A drink is also included. Sufficient overnight accommodation is also provided! Here the prices vary from a donation to € 15 for simple hostels! These mostly have dorms with multiple double beds! But there are also double rooms here and there! I personally recommend to get a pilgrim guide before the trip in which the accommodations are noted!
