Nasrid origin (11th century): it served the old Azitini Mosque and was supplied by the Aynadamar irrigation ditch, a sophisticated Andalusian hydraulic system. Christian reconstruction (17th century): on top of the original Muslim cistern, next to the current Church of San Nicolás. The current structure dates from 1646 according to Henríquez de Jorquera.

The Alcazaba is one of the city's most important attractions and offers many beautiful views and insights into its courtyards and gardens.

The Palacio Real is the successor to the Moorish Alcazar that burned down in 1734 and was built on behalf of King Felipe V. However, it was King Carlos III who was the first to move into the palace 23 years later. Of the 2,800 halls and rooms in the palace, about 50 can be visited. Every first Wednesday of the month at 12:00 noon there is a changing of the guard.
