In 1519 Ludovico Borromeo settled on the islets in front of Cannero and Cannobio. Exactly five centuries later the works for the restoration of the Castles of Cannero restarted. In the Middle Ages, the robber baron brothers Mazzardi tyrannized the entire lake region until they kidnapped the daughters of Podesta from Cannobio and thus overstepped the mark. Filippo Visconti destroyed its fortifications in 1414 and had the robber barons executed. The larger island is to be developed for tourism, which can be seen from the renovation work with the large yellow construction crane.

On the top of the hill of Monte Barro, about a hundred meters from the agglomeration of the municipality of Torricella Taverne, there are the remains of a building dating from the late Middle Ages (XIII - XIV centuries) closely related to the Castle of Santa Sofia in Bironico. The latter is part of the Rusca family's buildings and castles of well-known political and historical importance in Ticino and northern Italy. It is mentioned in a document in 1354 and may mark (according to the Historical Dictionary of Switzerland) the boundary of the possessions of the royal court of Agnuzzo. It is possible that the structure was built on a pre-existing Lombard position, perhaps even in late antiquity.

Ruin of an extensive castle complex on the banks of the Magliasina and on the old Roman road through the Malcantone. The square Bering and slight traces of the central main building (tower?)
