Lake Vercoche

The Monti Pelati, also called Monti Rossi, are a narrow band of hills located between Baldissero Canavese and Vidracco, characteristic precisely because their color and arid territory make them stand out from the rest of the environment. The reason why the territory looks like this is because it is composed of Peridotite rocks, rich in iron and magnesium. Peridotites are very hard and compact rocks that resist erosive agents more than other rock materials. From the alteration of iron and magnesium minerals, very acidic and poorly developed soils are generated. The vegetation that covers this small relief is consequently poor in trees but rich in uncommon herbaceous and shrubby species. The Vercoche barrage was built in 1953. Even if it is very low, because it does not reach a height of 2 m, it contains a basin of over 965,000 m3 of water (represented by Lake Vercoche together with Lake Piana, connected to each other) . The significant capacity is given by the considerable depth of Lake Vercoche which, in the centre, reaches 28 metres. The waters of the Vercoche and Piana lakes, released in the winter period in the bed of the Legna torrent, are then withdrawn, with those released from the Miserin lake with the intake work of the Hône 2 plant, on the torrent at an altitude of 1,140 m asl. The most suitable months to go to the barrier are those between May and October.
