1월 18, 2026, Bolsena Historic Center

The historic center of Bolsena climbs from the lake toward the medieval fortress, through stone alleys, arches, and glimpses that suddenly open onto the water. The tuff houses and small squares tell a story that intertwines the Middle Ages and lakeside tradition. The spiritual heart of the village is the Basilica of Santa Cristina, linked to the famous Eucharistic Miracle of the 13th century.

Along the Vie Cave of Vitozza we can admire the caves that have been divided into three types: mixed-use caves (as a dwelling and stable); stables (recognizable by the presence of mangers, troughs and fences); caves for residential use (present especially on the south-west side, more sheltered and better exposed to the sun). The latter are characterized by jars for grain, wells for collecting water and chimneys. The first evidence dates back to the 11th century, when numerous castles were built throughout the area. At that time Vitozza must have been part of a large fiefdom that included 15 castles among which we remember Sorano, Pitigliano, Farnese, Mezzano, etc. (Guiniccesca land). The fiefdom must have had considerable strategic importance since thanks to the fortifications it was possible to control the natural access routes to the sea.

The area of Vitozza, near San Quirico, is one of the most important medieval rock settlements in Italy that developed on a tuff spur above the Lente valley. The settlement, already existing in the 12th century, was definitively abandoned around the 15th century due to wars and depredations. Traveling along the main dirt road you can admire the remains of fortifications, churches and also numerous caves (more than two hundred) that were used as stables, homes and places of work.

The Rocca Farnese, located in Tuscia, is an imposing 16th-century structure built around a medieval tower, which dominates the historic center of Ischia di Castro. The palace, unfinished for centuries, was recently restored by the new owner, bringing to light ancient forms and a walled Renaissance loggia. Originally built in the 13th century as a fortress, it was transformed into a palace in the 16th century, perhaps designed by Antonio da Sangallo the Younger. It was the residence of the Farnese, lords of the Duchy of Castro, and, after the end of the duchy in 1649, it passed to the Apostolic Chamber and various families.

Benvenuti a Bolsena, the town to which Lago di Bolsena owes its name. With just over four thousand inhabitants, it is a relatively small city. The old medieval center is located on the hill overlooking the water. The main city on the lake shines with its simplicity and modesty. Here you will not find a large shopping center with all the well-known chains, but one long street runs from east to west on which you will find countless small shops from local entrepreneurs who sell authentic products. At the end of that long street is the Rocca Monaldeschi, a beautiful castle from the fourteenth century. In the castle you will find the municipal museum, where you can discover the history of the lake and the city of Bolsena through archaeological finds. An entrance ticket also gives access to the castle's roof terrace, where you can enjoy beautiful views.

The Fortezza di Bolsena, also known as Rocca Monaldeschi, is an impressive castle that dominates the panorama of the village and the lake below. Built by the Orvietani in 1295, it was later transformed by the Monaldeschi, one of the most important families of Orvieto1. Although they never occupied it, the castle is now home to the Museo Territoriale del Lago di Bolsena. It offers a breathtaking view.

A castle like something out of a picture book; with a goldfish fountain in front and ancient alleys underneath. Details: http://www.tip-reisen.de/italien/latium/vulkanseen/bolsenasee/bolsena/rocca-monaldeschi.html

The Rocca Monaldeschi della Cervara, built in the 11th century, stands on a hill in the heart of the medieval district of Bolsena, offering a splendid panorama of the picturesque village and the lake. Walking along the narrow and romantic streets that lead up to the castle from the center is an experience that is truly worth it, giving you the opportunity to explore the medieval architecture of the village while your gaze is lost over the roofs of the city, enjoying the view of the lake . Inside the castle there is the territorial museum of Lake Bolsena, which houses finds from the Etruscan, Roman and medieval eras.

Vitozza is an important rock settlement located in the municipality of Sorano. Its location is in the south-eastern part of the municipal territory, a couple of kilometers north-west of the hamlet of San Quirico. The Vie Cave path is entirely cycleable, only the final part towards Sorano is more technical.

The castle of Bolsena, also known as the Monaldeschi della Cervara fortress, is an ancient structure whose history has its roots in the year 1000, when it was commissioned by Pope Adrian IV as a defense against the threats of the time. Over the centuries, it passed to the Monaldeschi in 1295, undergoing renovations in the 14th century and, more recently, an impressive restoration between 1989 and 1990. This castle, now transformed into the territorial museum of Lake Bolsena, offers a fascinating exhibition of Etruscan, Roman and medieval finds, distributed over three floors.

Nice view from the old castle, which itselve is private property. Do not miss the narrow roads in the old city center and the pretty harbour.

The castle is situated on a hill in the middle of the medieval quarter of Bolsena. The best way to start the visit is on foot near the fountain in Piazza San Rocco. From there it goes up stairs and staircases. This is a wonderful way to discover the medieval architecture and in between look over the roofs of the city and enjoy the panorama of the lake. The castle itself was built between the 11th and 14th centuries as a fortified castle and bulwark in a trapezoidal shape with 4 square towers.
