The Bullet Catcher in the Mastbos. The Mastbos has been expanded several times over the course of its existence. The eastern strip of the forest, along the Galderseweg, was originally a heathland owned by the Nieuwenhuis, Blauwe Kamer and Schoondonk farms. In 1786, this strip was acquired by the Nassau Domains. In 1792 it was decided to set up an 'exercise place' here. This had to be surrounded by a 2.4 meter high wall, which would be planted with pine trees. However, this wall was probably never constructed. There is a kind of wall directly east of the Stouwdreef, but on the elevation map it looks natural: it is part of a winding ridge through the forest. A fortification had already been built on that ridge during the siege of Breda in 1637 (or already in 1624/5?) and was indicated in 1709 by surveyor Vereijck 1709 on his map of the Mastbos.
