The Kreidesee (Chalk Lake) in Lüneburg (also called Kreidebergsee) is a former gypsum and limestone quarry. It has developed into a popular recreational area north of the city center, known for its depth of up to 30 meters, impressive white limestone cliffs, and valuable salt-tolerant flora. However, swimming is prohibited for safety reasons. The Kreidesee is ideal for walks and geology enthusiasts. The lake originated from a former gypsum and limestone quarry. It is located north of Lüneburg's city center, in the Kreideberg district. It is up to 30 meters deep. It is captivating due to its unique features: white limestone cliffs up to 30 meters high and a rare salt-tolerant flora, which is a result of its proximity to the Lüneburg salt dome. It is a wonderful place for walking and hiking. There are paths around the lake, which also lead through the allotment gardens and offer panoramic views of Lüneburg. Benches are available. A visit is highly recommended.

The Kreidebergsee lake was formed by lime and gypsum mining, which, alongside salt mining, has been of enormous importance in Lüneburg for centuries. Starting in 1838, the lime quarry was expanded to include a high-performance lime kiln as part of its industrial use. Thanks to its abundant raw materials, which at that time were largely used for house construction and agriculture, the lime kiln was very successful. At the turn of the century, jobs were created for 300 to 400 people. Thus, the lime kiln was considered the largest employer of its time. In 1963, lime and gypsum mining in the area was discontinued because the operation had not been economically viable for several years. In addition, more and more residential developments were being built near the area, which caused the residents to feel disturbed by the lime kiln. As a result, the water pumps were shut down, and the pit slowly filled up to the groundwater level. The resulting lake was subsequently used as a garbage and construction waste dump until 1983, when it was developed into a local recreation area. Source: https://www.luenepedia.de/wiki/Kreidebergsee

The Barumer See is a larger bulge of the Neetze similar to the Reihersee. The access to the beach is a narrow street, there is no real parking space for cars or mobile homes, and there is no toilet. But it is easy to reach by bike and there is a small bike stand at the top. The much-described official barbecue area is on the other side, where there is also the campsite. The Barumer See is a small idyllic place that is used more by those who live there, with a small lawn and a small sandy beach. Swimming is at your own risk, there is no surveillance.

A narrow, inconspicuous path leads to the banks of the Fehlingsbleck. Here is a hut from where you can watch waterfowl. A board with pictures of the native birdlife helps with identification.

Beautiful lake directly on the Elbe-Seiten-Kanal with good water quality - admission is free! The north side of the Inselsee in Scharnebeck is open for swimming again! The DLRG monitors the lake on weekends. There is a sandy beach on the bathing bay. Large lawns with shady trees invite you to linger. A nudist area has been set up. Barbecue areas and mobile toilets are available. On sunny days, drinks, ice cream and snacks are available from a kiosk. The natural zones offer a habitat for water birds and fish. If you would like to cast your fishing rod, you can purchase a fishing license for guests. https://www.lueneburger-heide.de/natur/sehenswuerdigkeit/1179/inselsee.html

The Kreidebergsee in Lüneburg is a beautiful local recreation area located north of the city center. The lake was created by lime and gypsum mining and was converted into a 14.5 hectare recreation area in the 1980s. The impressive limestone cliffs and the rare salt flora make the Kreidebergsee an ecologically valuable place. The lake is up to 30 meters deep and is fed by groundwater and rainwater. It is a popular destination for walks and offers beautiful views of the surrounding nature and the city of Lüneburg. Due to its geomorphological features, some specially adapted plant species can be found there that are otherwise rare.
