The Kreidebergsee, a local recreation area located directly in the center of Lüneburg, offers a nice opportunity to take a walk in the countryside - here there are beautiful views of the limestone cliffs, and from the upper paths there is a panoramic view of Lüneburg.

The Kreidebergsee was created by gypsum mining and was converted into a 14.5-hectare recreational area in the 1980s. Due to the rare salt flora, the lake is ecologically very valuable and lets you really "breathe".

The Kreidebergsee in Lüneburg is also an end product of building material mining. It has no inflow or outflow. It is fed by groundwater and rainwater. It is not a nature reserve, but a local recreation area for the Kreideberg district. You can also walk around it, to do this you have to cross the allotment garden district at the top of the Kreideberg.

It has a population of teals, coots, a pair of swans and also great crested grebes. Guests are sometimes black-headed gulls and geese. The water quality is something special and the city has issued a bathing ban for safety reasons.
