Unfortunately, we weren't able to enter the grounds. It looks great from the outside and we're curious to visit.

The Felddieksboll motte to the south may have been the castle's predecessor. Loxten Castle was built in 1474 by Johann von Dinklage on an existing farm, which had presumably been brought into the marriage by his wife, Rixa von Brawe, as a fief of the County of Tecklenburg. His son, also named Johann, was a burgomaster of Quakenbrück Castle but lived in Loxten. In 1649, the Dinklage line of Loxten died out in the male line, and the property passed through marriage in 1653 to Captain Franz von Frydag zu Buddenburg. His son sold the property to Christian Günther von Hammerstein in 1682. He had the present castle built between 1691 and 1698. The Barons von Hammerstein-Loxten still live on the property, which was renovated in 1921/22.

Parts of the old foundation walls have been visibly recreated in the lawn. Not far away is the well-preserved gatehouse and a coach house built in the 21st century.

Loxten Moated Castle & Estate, mid-16th century, Dutch Neoclassical, Southeast of the present farmstead stood a fortified complex, first mentioned in 1474 as a dowry by Rixa von Brawe during her marriage to Johann von Dincklage. An heir, Frydag zu Buddenburg, then sold Loxten in 1682 to Lieutenant Colonel Christian-Günther von Hammerstein, who thus established the Loxten branch of the family. Serving as a member of the Order of Orange, he and his wife Agnes, née Schenck von Winterstedt, commissioned a Dutch architect to design a two-story manor house in the Dutch Renaissance style. Construction began in 1691. When Christian-Günther was killed in battle a year later, his widow continued the construction with the help of her brother-in-law, who lived in Gesmold. The entire complex was completed in 1698. Initially the property was used as a summer or country residence.

Unfortunately, the castle can only be visited from the outside, but it looks very well maintained and the architecture is admirable.
