The castle rampart on the island of Poel is an important historical relic from the early modern period of fortification. It is located in the present-day village of Kirchdorf, the island's main town, and marks the site of the former ducal castle of Poel, which was built at the beginning of the 17th century under Duke Adolf Friedrich I of Mecklenburg.

The fortifications featured a large rampart with a moat in which a star-shaped fort stood. The castle had two floors and was also part of the complex. It had two wings and some adjoining buildings, some of which were built close to the wall, forming a ramp up for the soldiers. The ramparts, which also housed the church in Kirchdorf at the time, were equipped with around 30 cannons and were intended to deter attackers from afar. However, the fortress was repeatedly overrun in the course of several armed conflicts and during the Thirty Years' War. It was repeatedly destroyed and fortified and finally abandoned. Interesting history of the structure, the fort side facing the harbor offers nice seating on different levels offering a nice view over the harbor and the island area.

The island church is partially surrounded by a former rampart that belonged to the former Poel Fortress. This was built in 1620 and was intended to secure the Wismar Bay and the port entrance to Wismar. The fortress with its castle was destroyed in the Thirty Years' War. Today only a few earthen walls remain.
