The Großer Varchentiner See is located north of the Mecklenburg Lake District in the Mecklenburg Lake District in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and belongs entirely to the municipality of Groß Plasten. It covers an area of 1.81 km² and has a maximum width of 1,600 meters and a maximum length of 1,500 meters. The lake is almost entirely surrounded by a reed belt and is wooded on the southern shore, while the western shore is marshy.

The lake is located just outside Chemnitz. Good for swimming in the warm season and really very clean. Very popular with anglers in the cooler season.
