Bautzen boasts several important fountains, including the Ritter-Dutschmann Fountain on the main market square, the historic New Waterworks in the city fortifications, the Nymph and Unicorn drinking fountain on Reichenstraße, and the Elector Johann Georg Fountain. There's also the historic Gesundbrunnen fountain, whose spring was once considered to have healing properties. These fountains are part of the city's sights and history.

The chapel in the castle tower, consecrated in 1225 by the Bishop of Meissen, Bruno II, was decorated in the 15th century. Destroyed as St. George's Chapel in the Thirty Years' War, it was never restored. The monument on the tower, created in 1486 by a southwest German master, depicts the Hungarian King Matthias Corvinus (1443-1490). Matthias was Bohemian rival king from 1469-1490 and ruler of the Bohemian neighboring countries, including Lusatia. The coats of arms in the monument to the right of King Matthias are, from above, the coats of arms of Galicia, the Hunyadi and Luxembourg, and to the left, the coats of arms of Styria, Austria, Silesia and Lusatia. Two four-field alliance coats of arms above the king show, on the right, that of Hungary and Dalmatia, and on the left, that of Bohemia and Moravia. Four copies of the monument are known: three in Budapest and Szeged (Hungary) and one in Král'ova Lehota (Slovakia). Ruins of a hilltop castle at 275 m above sea level. NN on a granite cone surrounded by the Spree. The name Körse refers to the Sorbian origin. From the 10th century onwards, the rocky spur was used to build a fortification, a redoubt, as the Sorbian settlement area was extended to the region of today's Kirschau. The purpose of the rampart was to protect the settlement area from unexpected attacks. Occupied and destroyed around 1100, a stone German fortification was built on the same site between 1200 and 1250 At that time, the castle was the largest and strongest defensive structure in Upper Lusatia. Their task was to protect the Bohemian Trail, one of the oldest traffic connections between Upper Lusatia and Bohemia (known there as Alte Prager Straße). It led from Bautzen via Obergurig, Kirschau, Schirgiswalde and Sohland to Sderchluckenau (Šluknov), Bohemian Leipa (Česká Lípa) and Prague. In addition, a salt road crossed nearby, which also had to be guarded. Later, however, the lords of the castle were accused of robbery, so that in 1352 the castle was stormed and destroyed by troops from the League of Six Towns. An information board in the remains of today's complex claims that the lords of the castle were declared enemies more because of their opposition to the Bohemian king and the League of Six Towns. In 1359 the castle was again destroyed and razed. There was no reconstruction. Source: Wikipedia

Built between 1483 and 1486 on the basis of the Matthias Gate in the late Gothic style. Named after the Hungarian King Matthias Corvinus, who owned the castle from 1469 to 1490 as sovereign of Upper Lusatia. On the city side of the tower there has been a monumental sandstone relief by Briccius Gauske since 1486, depicting King Matthias. Source: Wikipedia

The Matthias Tower, Upper Sorbian Maćijowa wěža, is a gate tower from the late 15th century on the north-east side of the Ortenburg in Bautzen. After the Peace of Olmütz (1479), through which Lusatia was awarded to the Hungarian King Matthias Corvinus, the Ortenburg was rebuilt in the late Gothic style by the bailiff on his behalf between 1483 and 1486. The Matthias Tower with the relief, named after the king, also dates from this period. The castle was accessible from Schloßstraße through the Matthias Gate. Even before the Matthias Tower was built, a castle chapel was set up on the second floor of what was then the Matthias Gate. From the outside, it can be seen from the city side through the two elongated pointed arch windows in the Matthias Tower to the south-east. Inside, the chapel has an area of just a few square meters and is protected by the inner battlement of the tower. Below the two pointed arch windows was an altar.[1] Opposite the window side is a box, which can be reached via a narrow, dark staircase. On this staircase there is a balustrade in the style of a delicate Gothic tracery. Below the box is a floor-to-ceiling niche, which was probably used to store sacred objects and vestments. The doors in the chapel were also heavily decorated. On the ceiling between the windows and on the opposite side are two angels, each holding a shield. The chapel was inaugurated in 1225 by Bishop Bruno II von Porstendorf of Meissen. It was consecrated to Knight George as the patron saint and as a result was given the name St. George's Chapel. As a result, it was richly endowed in particular by the knights of the area. Source: Wikipedia

Bautzen, Upper Sorbian Budyšin audio file / audio sample (listen)?/i, until June 3, 1868 officially Budissin (see also under place name), is a large district town in East Saxony. The city lies on the Spree and is the district seat of the district of Bautzen, which is named after it. With around 40,000 inhabitants, Bautzen is also the largest city in the district and the second largest in Upper Lusatia, as well as its historic capital. Although only a Sorbian minority of 5 to 10% of the population lives in the town in the Sorbian settlement area, it is the political and cultural center of the Sorbs. Source: Wikipedia

The tower got its name from the Hungarian king, who received Lusatia through the Peace of Olomouc. The tower was built in the Gothic style at the end of the 15th century. It used to be the only access to the castle.

The late Gothic Ortenburg was rebuilt in the years 1483-1486 as it was badly destroyed by two city fires. In the Thirty Years War, further damage occurred, which was repaired shortly afterwards, and the striking Renaissance gables were erected in the process.
