The photo point in Salzwedel, as seen in your picture, impressively frames one of the city's most striking historical ensembles: the mighty keep of the former city fortifications and the Gothic St. Mary's Church in the background. The red frame with the lettering "Hanseatic City of Salzwedel - The Altmark" draws the eye to this charming motif and makes it a popular spot for souvenir photos. Surrounded by manicured greenery and mature trees, the area around the photo point invites not only photography but also a place to linger. Salzwedel is a bicycle-friendly city with a high quality of life – perfect for a stop on a city tour through the Altmark region.

The oldest settlement area in the city is this part, the castle garden and castle tower. The complex is almost circular, surrounded by a ring wall and ramparts as well as a moat. The center is the keep from the beginning of the 13th century.

The Burggarten can be found in the center of the Hanseatic city of Salzwedel. The small park is located on the site where there used to be a castle. It is believed that the castle was built in the 9th century and was intended to protect a trade route between Magdeburg and Lüneburg. The castle was first mentioned as “Saltwidele” castle during its siege by Emperor Henry V in 1112. In 1134 the building became the property of Albrecht the Bear and thus became Ascanian property. The bailiffs of Salzwedel, who enforced the interests of the margraves, then lived in the castle until the beginning of the 13th century. The keep, which is still visible today, was built at the end of the 12th century. In 1746 a three-story residential building was added, but it was demolished again in 1899. The castle complex was originally built in a ring shape, had a diameter of 220 meters and was protected by moats and walls. Today there are remains of the defensive wall, the moat, the St. Anne's Chapel and the 24 meter high keep on the grounds of the castle garden in Salzwedel. The keep has a high entrance at a height of 12 meters and a 3.6 meter thick wall. The keep used to be covered with a pointed roof.
