The Jeetze is a small river that flows picturesquely through the old town of Salzwedel, creating a charming connection between nature and historic city architecture. Lovingly restored half-timbered houses stand along its banks, creating an idyllic townscape, especially in the center. Historically, the Jeetze served not only as a water source and transportation route, but also played an important role in the city's brewing industry. Today, the green banks, small bridges, and proximity to attractions such as the Neuperver Gate and the Danneil Museum invite you to stroll and linger, making the river a worthwhile part of the cityscape.

Johann-Friedrich-Danneil-Museum; founded in 1836, since 1932 based in the former provost's office in Salzwedel; named after the prehistorian and high school professor Johann Friedrich Danneil (1783-1868), it was one of the first association museums in Germany; starting with numerous prehistoric and early historical exhibits from the Altmark, the collection now also includes exhibits from the Middle Ages and later centuries and continues to focus primarily on the (local) history of the Altmark;

The Jeetze is a typical lowland river in the landscape of the "Western Altmark Plateau" with sandy-gravelly to sandy-mudgy bed substrates, which in many places is accompanied by one-sided riparian woodland, reed beds and moist perennial meadows. Grasslands dominate in the surrounding areas. Within the villages, the stream is regularly built up and anthropogenically over-shaped. Several weirs, bed slides and dams artificially regulate the water levels. Source: https://www.natura2000-lsa.de/front_content.php?idart=281&idcat=33&lang=1

Founded in 1932, the Johann Friedrich Danneil Museum is an important historical collection and research center in the western Altmark, emerging from the collections of the Altmark Historical Society founded in 1836. The thematic focus of the historical society was also reflected in the collection's main focuses at the time: prehistory and early history, sacred sculpture, guild crafts, seals, coins and weapons. This historical core collection has been continuously expanded and expanded to include other collection groups in the following period. This particularly affected the area of prehistory and early history. Various emergency rescues and years of targeted excavations on the Germanic cremation cemetery in Zethlingen have enabled a number of new archaeological finds to be recorded. The museum library has also been expanded beyond the basic collection of the historical society up to the present day. Source: https://st.museum-digital.de/institution/5

The largest church in the Hanseatic city of Salzwedel in the Altmark is the Marienkirche. Despite its Romanesque origins, the Protestant church is classified as brick Gothic. Due to its slightly curved tower, St. Mary's Church became known as the district town's landmark. Anyone who visits the Hanseatic city of Salzwedel should also pay a visit to the city's landmark - St. Mary's Church. This fits particularly well into the medieval cityscape, as the church presents the old North German brick Gothic style. The five-aisled basilica is just as impressive with its clearly structured church interior as with its body. Here, the interested guest will find a culturally and historically highly valued attraction.
