The Balksee lake is located in the heart of the "Balksee und Randmoore/Basmoor und Nordahner Holz" nature reserve, a virtually untouched moorland and geestrand lake area. The tower is only about 150 meters from the parking lot and is easily accessible by bike or on foot. The Flögelner See is an approximately 1.55 square kilometer (= 155 hectare) moor lake near the village of Flögeln north of the moor spa Bad Bederkesa in the north of Lower Saxony. There are water connections to Halemer and to Dahlemer See, which are under nature protection. The lake borders extensive moor areas in the northeast. The very flat north-west bank tends to silt up. In contrast, in the southeast of the lake there is a partly bizarrely hollowed out steep bank on a geest slope. There is a small island in the lake where you can see the remains of a medieval moated castle. Numerous species of birds nest at the lake and whooper swans come from Northern Europe and Russia in winter. The southern lake outflow leads over the floodplain to the Hadelner Canal, which is part of the Elbe-Weser shipping route. The lake drains are not navigable and not even suitable for paddlers because they are very overgrown. The lake is popular as a fishing area because it is rich in eel, perch, bream, pike, carp, rudd, roach, tench, whitefish and pikeperch.
