"Suddenly it's there, just past Speicher, down in the deep valley of the Kyll. Located on the Mühlenweg, the first hiking trail of the day, we come across an angler's home. Slightly getting on in years, fabulously decorated with cobwebs, with latently erotic wall paintings from the fifties(?), one half of the house is unlocked and lures with the wall inscription: "Welcome to the quiet Eifel pilgrim who is reading the book of nature." Well, if that's not an invitation. We'll follow her immediately. Almost immediately. If it weren't for the other non-pilgrims who have littered this friendly place in such a way that I lose any feeling of staying overnight. Our happiness on a long tour. Beautiful shelter in the forest with wood and fireplace.

There was wood on site, a fire pit and it's fairly well covered. However, visible and not protected from rain and wind, the tarp was important, but we were happy to find shelter there at night.

I want to contribute to the fact that the refuge is better listed. I like to use the shelters for overnighters. Unfortunately, you cannot sleep on the bench at this hut. It's too narrow for that. However, the base plate is raised and made of concrete so that Manaus can easily lay out his mat there in heavy rain.

A centuries-old tree, the “thick beech”, stood here at the intersection of various local hiking trails with the main hiking trail 4, the Josef-Schramm-Weg. When it had to be struck by lightning and then felled, the Trier hiking warden Peter Zimmer took the initiative at the beginning of the 1960s and, on behalf of the local group, had a six meter high wooden cross erected at the same place in the forest. In January 1964, the first Eifel Cross was inaugurated as a memorial for all deceased members of the association, which is commemorated annually on a November Sunday. Over the decades, the wooden cross weathered, which is why it was renewed in July 2010 and inaugurated on November 17th as part of a hike with the memorial of the dead by Deacon Wilhelm Kunzem from Ehrang.
