The Burgsee near Gottorf Castle belongs to the city of Schleswig. It is located in the western part of the city and occupies an area of 31.83 ha. This includes the artificially enlarged Castle Island with Gottorf Castle, which measures 10.47 hectares. This leaves 21.38 hectares of water surface. In the north and east, the island is only separated from the mainland (district of Lollfuss) by the 20 meter wide moat. The lake was the most inland part of the Schlei until 1582, but was then separated from it by Duke Adolf by a dam almost 100 meters long. Today, this Gottorfer dam is 28 meters wide.
